Job Description

Title: Registered Patent Attorney | 2-4 years' experience

Company Name: MinterEllison

Vacancy: 3

Job Location: Australia, New South Wales, Sydney,

Employment Status: Full time

About us

MinterEllison is renowned as one of Asia Pacific's leading legal practices. What sets us apart is we are driven by a strong sense of purpose: We create lasting impacts for our clients, our people and our communities. MinterEllison is redefining the boundaries of what it means to be a law firm.

Legal 500 Asia Pacific has this year identified MinterEllison as the equal most ranked firm in Australia, with 24 rankings across practice areas. We also placed as the highest ranked law firm in LinkedIn's 25 Top Companies in Australia for 2019.

Your role

MinterEllison is looking for a Registered Patent Attorney to join its unique patent practice. MinterEllison’s patent practice is the only practice that is truly integrated within a law firm in Australia. MinterEllison’s patent attorneys not only draft, prosecute and advise on patents for the firm’s clients, but also manage patent office oppositions and Federal Court patent litigation. This includes working intimately with technical experts and Australia’s leading patent counsel to draft evidence. This is an exceptional opportunity for a self-motivated attorney that is looking to grow within a privately owned law firm environment.

The ideal candidate will have around 2-4 years post registration experience within a high performing patent group. The technical capabilities of the candidate are more important than the degree. However, degrees in Chemical Engineering or similar, and Law, will be highly regarded. Industry experience will also be highly regarded.

What we are looking for

The ideal candidate will:

  • be highly skilled in drafting patent applications;
  • have experience prosecuting patents to grant in all major jurisdictions;
  • have technical skills in chemical and/or materials engineering (skills in control systems and automation will be highly regarded);
  • be keen to learn new skills such as drafting evidence and other Court documents (or already have these skills);
  • be keen to be part of a team where lawyers and patent attorneys work collaboratively; and
  • have excellent written and verbal skills.

Who we are:

We make diversity in all its forms central to collaboration. We know that when we bring together diversity of thinking, skills, experience, gender identity, backgrounds and orientations, we get better results. This is why we offer agile and alternative working options to encourage balance, wellbeing and support for sustainable ways of working. We offer up to 20 weeks paid parental leave for the primary carer within the first 24 months following birth or adoption, and a range of social, financial and health benefits, including free gym membership – all with no minimum tenure.

We welcome applications from people of all ages, cultural backgrounds, genders (including if you identify as transgender or gender diverse), sexual orientations, as well as people living with a disability or who have family or carer responsibilities. We particularly encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to apply for roles with MinterEllison.

We are recognised as a WGEA Employer of Choice for Gender Equality in Australia and hold Gold employer status with the Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI).
