About the Role

We are looking for a senior lawyer to join our large in-house team for a period of parental leave cover.  Reporting into the Head of Legal, the successful candidate will supervise a small team of lawyers, working closely with the business to provide legal advice on a variety of customer facing matters to ensure Youi is well positioned to continue to remain a challenger brand. Commencing in January, you can work from our amazing Sunshine Coast head office, or be largely work from home with the ability to travel up to the coast when required.

Major Duties

  • Provide high quality legal advice and guidance on a range of complex corporate and commercial issues including:
    • general contracts, with a strong focus on financial services (APRA and insurance experience highly regarded)
    • procurement matters
    • company secretarial matters
    • intellectual property
    • privacy
    • confidentiality and
    • marketing
  • Partner with senior leaders in operations to provide timely commercial legal advice that enables them to make sound business decisions
  • Identify and report on upcoming changes to law and regulation and advise leaders on potential impacts
  • Advise staff on legal risks, liability, and legislative compliance issues within or affecting their areas of responsibility
  • Assist with adhoc projects and initiatives as needed to support the ongoing growth of Youi. 

Qualifications, Skills & Competencies

  • LL. B and be an Australian admitted solicitor or holding a current practising certificate in Australia
  • 8+ years PAE (in-house or private practice) to ensure you possess the breadth of experience required to be an SME adding value to senior leaders as well as supervising more junior legal staff
  • Insurance or Financial Services exposure highly regarded
  • Excellent understanding of corporate and consumer law, as well as financial services regulatory framework
  • Previous exposure to building or leading a high performing team
  • High level of integrity and professional accountability
  • Demonstrated ability to create legal defensive or proactive strategies
  • A strategic, commercial mindset with advanced business acumen and a passion for providing sound legal advice
  • Strong attention to detail with well-developed analytical skills
  • Excellent communication skills, with a track record in successfully influencing people and process
  • A natural relationship builder, with the ability to engage with all types of individuals building trust and respect with ease
  • Collaborative team player, eager to learn and share knowledge with the team.
